Cathedral

St. Basil's Cathedral
Moscow, USSR (then)
March 1984

According to Google, St. Basil's is celebrating its 450th anniversary today. How the world changes in a little over 25 years.

Tech stuff: One of my classmates--this was a school trip--took the photo, and I think it was with my 1980s Instamatic.

Last night, I put the original Fame on for the daughter to watch. I'd sort of expected it to look cheesy or corny or really dated, but in some ways, it's held up much better than I would have thought. I was in high school when it was first released, and the characters seemed quite true to my own age, but it was really difficult to see my 14-year-old as one of that number.

Except that she is. Performing arts high school in six weeks. And while her school is in a rough part of town, it's not as rough as this place.

Still, she sat there and laughed out loud at some of the scenes, and was appropriately moved by others. I pointed out places she'd seen, how much they'd changed in the years since the movie was shot.

She liked the movie, and I was glad that she could see how it applied to her own life. And how much things haven't changed since I was in high school.

Cool change

Pacific Ocean
18 June 2011

Supposedly, the hot and humid weather is going to depart. The air has been so thick you could stir it with a spoon, but things have dried out a bit, and the water has gone back where it belongs--the ocean.

Waiting

Universal City Walk
Universal City, California
20 June 2011

The daughter wrote a funny account of this event last night, describing her own reaction as "being grabbed by the trachea." And yet, as nervous as she thinks she was, she noticed an awful lot of detail.

I know that brief as it was, it was one of those things she won't forget.

Tech stuff: Taken with my iPhone4. I'm so grateful for the nice people in the world and the people we spoke to that night are the nicest.

Spooky

Moonset
5 July 2011

I was already in the midst of last night's story on Out of the Kitchen when I stopped for a bit and was going around closing windows. I caught sight of the moon, and it so eerily reflected what I was writing about that I had to run out and photograph it.

And you know, more practice never hurt. Eventually, I'll get it right and you won't have to look at the moon anymore.

Like a hawk

Hawk
5 July 2011

I've never been particularly good at identification, call guides and books notwithstanding. This hawk has marked characteristics of both Sharp-shinned and Cooper's hawks (I'm leaning toward Cooper's particularly because it's capped rather than hooded, though it has skinny legs and a more squared off tail. And it's big. If you're interested, you can read about ID differences here.)

I've been stalking this baby (or its twin) for some time, but it's good at spotting motion in the house and I have large French doors facing this fountain. I had to crawl across the floor to get my camera, and then I snuck into the laundry room to shoot a series of photos, rather than try to capture it head on. It evidently could hear the beeping of the camera, because it kept swiveling to look my direction.

They love me

"Come out and see something!" one called excitedly, running into the house. "And bring your camera!"

So, I did as instructed, and found this waiting in the gutter for me.

"You know that will make it on the blog," said the other with satisfaction.

The neon lights are bright

Times Square
New York, New York
10 May 2011

It's pretty and flashy and sparkly. A spectacle. And as the kid who grew up in the energy crisis of the 1970s, I find myself itching to run around turning lights out.

Tech stuff: Taken with my Nikon D40. I do love the glitter and the shine. But I am also the one who is forever telling my family to "turn off that light!"
