The tip

Cape Farewell, Greenland
31 July 2008

I fell completely in love with these amazing giants. Their color, their texture, their complex sculptural shapes, everything about them is majestic and gorgeous, each as incredible as the last. I was in thrall.

Pick up the pieces

Crossing from Vancouver Island
7 July 2010

She's gotten her audition with the arts high school, for the moment, her heart's desire. I hope that she makes it to the next level.

I hope that it is everything she wants it to be.

A bright pop of color

Butchart Gardens
Brentwood Bay, British Columbia
6 July 2010

That day was really quite warm, and it's a pleasant memory. The bright flame of the flowers looks so inviting.

Tech stuff: Taken with my Nikon D40. And my new lens is still sitting in its box...

Dirt: an important part of your diet

Near Tom's Place
Inyo National Forest, California
18 June 2000

Tent? Check. Cookie? Check. Vast quantities of dirt? Check.

Life is good.

Tech stuff: Taken with an old point and shoot, probably an Olympus.

Moonset

20 January 2011

With all that is happening at the moment, my heart really isn't in much of what I need to do from moment to moment. I'm taking the good where I can find it.

Peek-a-boo

Milton hiding
24 March 2009

He will hide out and play pounce
usually at night,
when I'm closing the house.
He will lie in wait
and pop out to feint
At my legs then away to bounce
merrily down the hall.

(my idea turned to poetry by the daughter.)

Yeah...more snow

Sequoia National Park
30 December 2010

Yeah, it was 80F here today (sorry, all you folks digging out), so the snow looked okay again.

Hey, it wasn't the moon, right?

Kicking the tires

14 January 2011

As every good consumer knows, you check out a car with great care.

Olivier is such a guy. Just checking out the undercarriage isn't enough.

He wants to know what's in that toolbox.

Tech stuff: Taken with my Nikon D40 and Nikkor telephoto lens.

Yes?

Parrot
13 December 2010

I'd picked up the son from the bus, and the sun was dipping toward the horizon. As the sun starts to set, the parrots move wherever it is they go in the evening, and a group of them had decided to take a break, settling in my magnolia and the Italian cypress across the street. They were yelling back in forth in what seemed a companionable sort of parrot way.

"Mom," the son hissed. "Get your camera. Get your camera!"

What transpired was that he wanted to take some photos of the birds (with my camera). He's not really been interested in photography, but he had fun snapping off a few shots, and was anxious to see if they came out ok. Ah, the instant gratification of the digital age...

I did take this one. The bird seemed largely amused by our maneuvers.

Tech stuff: Taken with my Nikon D40 and Nikkor telephoto lens. I've taken no photos in the new year, and I even have a new lens that is sitting in an unopened box...

Volcanics

Namafjall Hverir, Iceland
25 July 2008

The temperatures have been running below normal here for a month or so, and since the medical problems started, I've been so cold all the time, and completely intolerant of said cold. So, I thought, hmm, no more snow pictures. What's warm? Volcanoes! Fumaroles spewing steam! Of course, it was in the mid-40sF when I took this photo.

Girls who look under rocks

Sequoia National Park
29 December 2010

I was playing around taking photos and the daughter was waiting for me. I don't know exactly what she was doing: kicking snow around, seeing how far she would sink down in the powder.

Being a kid in the snow.

Dangerous beauty

Sequoia National Park
30 December 2010

Even with chains and the spouse, who was behind the wheel, crawling down the road, it was treacherous. Rock slides, mud, downed trees, cars (and the snow plow!) unbelievably barrelling up the hill made us pretty tense.

Snowy mountain majesty

Moro Rock
Sequoia National Park
30 December 2010

The last time we visited Sequoia, which was in late November a couple of years ago, the trail up Moro Rock was still open and so we hiked it. By winter, many of the trails, roads and attractions are closed, and as we circled around various parts of the park earlier this week in the deep and falling snow, we were glad that we took that opportunity. It is snowing there again today.

Brrr.
