One thing I learned this year was how to love my camera again, and how to better play with it effectively.

Also, never underestimate a magpie's eye.

Happy New Year.

Sunrise after the storm

We've returned from an adventure. The forecast said "snow showers." But over 4 feet fell yesterday. The sun returned this morning and the world sparkled.

Sometimes I get stuck on process and forget the end result. And how fortunate I am.

How my day began

21 December 2010

You can read the whole story at Out of the Kitchen, but suffice to say, we had an adventure this morning.

We had brunch at the Ath yesterday with the spouse's parents--a little pre-Christmas celebration since we won't see the grandparents for the big day.

I always have to laugh a little when I look at their Christmas decorations. We held our wedding reception at the Ath, and I always joke that I saved a fortune on decorations because the place was already decorated for the holidays and just looked gorgeous. The food there is unusually excellent, too, and the catering manager at the time was a dream.

It's always nice to go back and visit.

You might have heard it is raining in California. Because that's news.

A perfect foil to the cold and rainy day.

Of course, the daughter decided that hot chocolate and cookies make it more perfect.

Falling into a molten sky

11 December 2010

An unexpectedly gorgeous sunset tonight. The sky alternated between golden and lava.

They sat there this morning carrying on a loud and seemingly opinionated conversation. When I began taking photos, the one on the left watched me and made soft interrogative noises.

No!

3 December 2010

One of the many things I loathe about Orange County is the concept of the "Private Community" with its faux gentility and myriad restrictions. There are numerous such places near where we live, and I was struck by the incongruity of "Happy Holidays" nailed grimly to a tree (but in neutral blue and white) in such close proximity to NO TRESPASSING NO SOLICITING NO CURBSIDE PARKING. I'm sure they're violating their own HOA rules.

As the spouse and son noted, NO BREATHING and NO LIVING should be appended to the sign, given that the "Private Community" is home to numerous curmudgeonly old people who don't know how to drive.

Tech stuff: Taken with my Nikon D40. By evening, the blue and white words had been placed by a red ribbon. Subtext?
